Ever since 1953, the Chevrolet Corvette has defined the classic American sportscar. Today’s latest Corvette models may not look like Chevy’s original ’53 model, but they still contain legendary Corvette DNA.
For comparison purposes, we thought it would be a good idea to contrast classic and contemporary Corvettes. Let’s take a look!
Production Figures
If good things come in small batches, the ’53 Corvette might be the best car ever. Just 300 were produced in the initial production year. To date, more than 32,000 C7 Corvettes have rolled off the assembly lines.
Base Price
For just under $3,500, you could purchase a brand new Corvette in 1953. The latest Corvette Coupe Manual sells for $81,185 – about 23 times more than its 1953 predecessor!
Acceleration
During the Eisenhower administration, a low double-figure 0-60 time was respectable; the 1953 Corvette could reach 60 MPH in 11.0 seconds. The 2017 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport is considerably quicker, with a 0 to 60 time of 3.8 seconds!
Horsepower
The Corvette’s come a long way in the HP department. The original 1953-54 model had the same engine, a 235 cubic inch, 3.9 L, 150 HP blue flame. Compare that to the C7 Vette, with a 6.2 L, 450 HP powerhouse!
Transmission
Our perspective of the Corvette has shifted since 1953 – especially with the cars actual shifting mechanism. Today’s C7 Corvette features two different types of transmissions: a 7-speed manual and 6-speed paddle shifter. Compare that to the 1954 Corvette, which had a 3-speed manual transmission!
Brakes
It’s hard to believe, but the first Corvette sported 11-inch drum brakes on both axles. The C7’s raw speed and power require a bit more braking effort, so it comes standard with front and rear disc brakes. Slotted rotors are included on the Z51 to avoid overheating.
