Swapping Out Your Corvette Steering Wheel: Everything You Need to Know
For Corvette enthusiasts, any discussion about ÔÇ£wheel replacementÔÇØ typically refers to the four wheels on the underside of your car. But the topic of this blog post has to do with another type of wheel – specifically, the Corvette steering wheel. So forget about tires, axles, bearings, lug nuts and the like; we’re going to walk you through a Corvette steering wheel replacement.
A Corvette steering wheel swap is an excellent way to add style and substance to your Vette, and it’s probably much easier than you think. Our experts here at RPI have put together a step-by-step guide that applies to most modern Corvette models.
Note: for specific instructions for your particular model, you can also use an ÔÇ£officialÔÇØ Corvette repair and maintenance manual (such as Haynes or Chilton, for example) for more detail.
What are the main reasons for a Corvette steering wheel swap?
- Restoration: for older Corvettes, the steering wheel is oftentimes the central focus of the interior cockpit; a new steering wheel can add flashy retro appeal and that ÔÇ£fresh off the assembly lineÔÇØ appearance that many Corvette fanatics love.
- Function and control: let’s face it – a steering wheel swap on any car (not just a Corvette) provides superior control, especially if the older wheel is starting to slip. Because Corvettes are known for their legendary responsiveness and precise control, there’s no wonder that a steering wheel swap is a popular, preferred upgrade.
- The ÔÇ£wowÔÇØ factor: a Corvette isn’t just another car. It’s not just another mode of transportation. It’s a personal expression of style, and a way of life for many. The steering wheel is the one part of the Vette that you’re always in touch with, so an upgrade or retrofit is the perfect opportunity to not only optimize cockpit function, but also show everyone how much you love your Corvette!
When you’re ready for your Corvette steering wheel swap, it’s a good idea to set aside about an hour of time. If you’re not the most mechanically inclined and rate your ÔÇ£car part aptitudeÔÇØ as amateur or beginner, you should also have a buddy around that knows their way around a Vette.
Ready to get started? Let’s see get started on your Corvette steering wheel swap!
- Cut the power source. First things first – disconnect the battery. Easiest way to do this is by loosening the nuts on the negative terminal.
- Remove the airbag. For older Vettes, this obviously isn’t an issue. But never Corvettes, such as the C6 and C7, it’s a necessity. Insert a small screwdriver (such as a T14) on the bottom of the wheel (there are a pair of tiny holes) and gently pull the airbag out. For most Corvette airbag configurations, you’ll have to unplug three connectors (green, black and yellow).
- Remove the large connection located on the rear of the steering wheel. This connection is much larger than the three connections in step 2.
- Remove the single bolt that secures the wheel in place. This is tricky; breaker bars may not work, but a half-inch impact driver seems to do the trick. This step requires a little bit of hard work and a lot of patience, but once the nut and bolt are removed, the wheel comes right out.
- Remove the old steering wheel and airbag connectors (if applicable) from the back of the steering wheel. You’ll need these connectors when you install the new steering wheel.
- Install the new steering wheel. You’ll have to put all previous connections back in place. To recap, these include:
- The 3 small airbag connectors (green, black and yellow).
- The large black connector on the back of the new wheel
- The nut and bolt that secure the wheel in place. Again, a half-inch impact driver should help with this step.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminals.
- Take your Corvette for a test drive and enjoy your steering wheel swap!
